MIDWIVES

A midwife is a trained medical professional with five or six (in the case of Advanced Midwives) years of full-time study behind them. A midwife is recognised as a professional, responsible and accountable individual who works in partnership with women to give the necessary support, care and advice during pregnancy, labour and the period after birth, to conduct low-risk births and to provide care for the newborn. Origin Family-Centred Maternity Hospital prides itself on the collective experience of its midwives. Professional midwives can and may deal with most emergencies within their scope of practice. Many of the team have achieved the status of Midwife Specialist according to Department of Health Notice No. 368 of 15 May 2014 regarding categories of nursing professionals in The Nursing Act 2005 (Act No. 33 of 2005).
