Water births are back on tap! Origin Family-Centred Maternity Hospital in Panorama announces that it will be allowing water births again from Monday 22 October

Since the City of Cape Town has relaxed the water restrictions slightly, Origin Family-Centred Maternity Hospital in Panorama has decided to offer water births again This comes into effect from Monday 22 October at 07h00.

Origin is the only maternity hospital in the Western Cape with six custom-made birthing baths, which facilitate pain relief during labour and birth. General Manager of Origin Family-Centred Maternity Hospital Sydney Grove pioneered water birth in private hospitals in South Africa more than 21 years ago.

He says “At Origin our water birth baths are in our private Birth Suites only, which also feature queen-size King Coil beds where partners may stay over. These suites cost R4500 above and beyond any medical aid payment, and an additional charge of R300 will be added for those who use the water birth bath either for actual birthing or for pain relief during labour. This is to offset some of the City’s surcharge on water. Each bath holds 400 litres of water, and both the baths and the water have to meet very strict temperature and clinical hygiene requirements.

“It has been very difficult for us not to be able to allow water births for the past nine months. I had women crying in my office – one of whom had flown in from Norway to stay in Cape Town for 6 weeks especially to have a water birth with us. Of course we used other techniques to help to soothe our clients and to assist at their births, including one case where the baby was born in the shower!

“Origin brings a whole new dimension to the birth experience, providing the option to give birth with a multidisciplinary team in a family-focused environment. We have two resident female obstetrician/gynaecologists, Drs Ilana Johnson and Lindi Murray of the Lila practice. Lila and also Dr Michael Kleyn work with the Grove De Beer Midwife Practice, which means low-risk women have every birthing option available, whether natural midwife-led care or a gynaecologist-led option. Origin also features a state-of-the-art theatre complex for caesarean sections and other selected gynaecological procedures. It is just wonderful to be able to bring water birth back as one of our special offerings for women in labour.”
