Origin focuses on providing a personalised childbirth experience that considers the unique preferences and needs of each of our clients.

Birth Suites

We have six luxurious Birth Suites with queen-sized beds, en-suite bathrooms and custom-designed birth baths. Women may use the birth bath to ease their labour or experience a life-changing water birth.

The Birth Suites are designed to promote a sense of relaxation, intimacy and comfort to support and comfort the woman during birth.

The couple stay together in the Birth Suite during their time at Origin Family-Centred Maternity Hospital. The emphasis is on ensuring that mom and baby are not disturbed during the golden hour after birth, and that families are given privacy and respect during this sacred event.

Birth Rooms

Our three comfortable Birth Rooms with three-quarter size beds feature en-suite bathrooms for privacy and convenience.

Women will labour and birth in this room, together with their partners. Once mom and baby are settled, they are moved to a Two-bed Postnatal Room.

Two-bed Postnatal Rooms

Our three Two-bed Postnatal Rooms offer a comfortable space for mothers and babies to bond and recuperate after birth. The en-suite bathroom includes a bath as well as a shower, and there is a separate toilet and basin.

Theatre Complex

Origin Family-Centred Maternity Hospital has a major theatre complex fitted with state-of-the-art features and equipment manufactured by Draeger, an international leader in medical and safety technology. The complex includes an operating theatre, a scrubbing area, a recovery area for patients entering or leaving surgery, as well as a central sterilising department. In this complex the safety of patients is a high priority. If you have a caesarean section at Origin Family-Centred Maternity Hospital your midwife will accompany you into theatre, and you will experience a ‘sensitive section’ (see FAQ for more information).

We have a Nursery which is used for medical procedures if necessary and has the required equipment. We believe that newborn babies belong skin-to-skin with mom and/or partner after birth, so babies do not stay in here.

We have the state-of-the-art equipment required for most neonatal emergencies, and all nursing staff are certified as Advanced Neonatal Resuscitators.

Please note: In the unlikely event of your baby needing intensive care, the baby will be transferred to a registered neonatal intensive care unit, e.g. Panorama, Mediclinic, N1 City Netcare, Blaauwberg Netcare or Constantia Mediclinic.

Origin’s Studio, which is close to our reception area, is a comfortable and versatile space with a flat screen TV which is used for antenatal classes, workshops, as well as HypnoBirthing classes.

Origin Family-centred Maternity Hospital has a state-of-the-art anti-baby theft system in operation at all three of its entrances and exits. We are the only hospital in South Africa with such a system, which puts a code onto soft silicone bands and disks placed around the baby’s leg straight after birth.

If a baby is carried over the perimeter lines, which are clearly marked in blue on the floors, an alarm will sound very loudly. It will also go off if someone attempts to remove the band from the baby’s leg, or tries to cut if off.

The only time that the anti-baby theft alarm will not sound is when the baby is about to be taken home, when the midwife will input a code, remove the band – and then has just 30 seconds to carry the baby out over the line to avoid the alarm sounding.

The hospital itself has nine security cameras, while Panorama Healthcare Centre has 24/7 security services at the concierge desk in the ground floor lobby. The entire complex is monitored by CCTV cameras. There is also an audio intercom on the east side of the building (on the podium level parking deck side) which can be rung when the building entrance door is closed, after hours. This will ring at both nursing stations inside hospital. The security services will be alerted to let you in.

If a woman has birthed in the car on the way to Origin Family Centred Maternity Hospital, a midwife will come down to attend to her with a "birth before arrival" pack.
